The Brick and the Rose.
Published in Paperback by Dramatist's Play Service (1963)
Author: Lewis John Carlino
Average review score:

Brick & The Rose a multimedia drama for community health
I have read and directed over eight productions this wonderful drama and each time I have done so it continues to excite and challenge me as a director and as a responsible member of the community . Each of the actors plays multiple roles and all who have participated have conveyed their insights that this particular play presents an important message about drug addiction in our communties as well as a theartical challenge to the actor and their craft. In my interpertation the actor employ movement and multimedia effects to enhance the original script which was performed on stools with the only props being music stands . I have found both methods of presentation effective. The play captures the life and pressures that cause a young man to finnaly loose his life to his addictions. Churches, schools, community goups and ensemble acting companies will find this play one of the best. I cannot reccommend it highly enough. Mr Carlino is a gifted writer and screen dirctor, his film scripts and direction include " The Deer Hunter" , "Class" and " Ressurection " A graduate of NYU school of the Arts all of his works are excellent. In particular another work " Telemachus Clay is a longer and more developed work written in the same style as the Brick and also dealing with a young man's struggles with life situations, again using several actors who must play multiple roles. "The Brick and The Rose" is an icon of one pathology of our modern society. It provides insight and instruction to the causes and tragic results of one of the major ills of our present community both urban and rural . Excellent for teens and adults alike. Highly recommended .

Deep and moving
The Brick and the Rose is my favorite play in the world. It is about a teenager who tragically dies of an overdose of drugs. The play is a flashback starting at his funeral and going to the time of his birth and then moving forward from there. It is a deep and moving play, and I love it to death!

Brothers and Friends: The Diaries of Major Warren Hamilton Lewis
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (September, 1988)
Authors: Clyde S. Kilby, Major Warren Lewis, and Marjorie L. Mead
Average review score:

Must read for any Lewis fan, opens up his world.
Warren Lewis, a devoted and understanding brother, has penned a journal which reveils his nature, his brother, and the situations surrounding them very well. A joy for anyone who has ever been inspired by Lewis, and a collection of writings by a man the world should know more about.

A delightful reading experience
This is the best diary I have ever read. The editors have done a superb job of pruning it down to a manageable reading size while still preserving the essential commentary. My appreciation for the outdoors was greatly enhanced by reading this book. Warren Lewis knew how to paint scenes and tell stories with flair. Recommended reading.

A Burst of Firsts: Doers, Shakers, and Record Breakers
Published in Hardcover by Dial Books for Young Readers (May, 2001)
Authors: J. Patrick Lewis and Brian Ajhar
Average review score:

Outrageous, funny and an inspiration
"A Burst of Firsts" is wonderfully written and illustrated in a larger than life scale which fits hand in glove with the inspiration that flows from every colorful and witty page. All the main characters, the doers, shakers and brakers are fully cranked and in real life had to be. These folks exceeded the epectations of others and themselves. Susan Montgomery Williams is clearly surprised and awed at what she can do, which underlies the theme of the book, which Susan whimsicly floats through. Brian Ajhar's pictures are hilarious and brilliantly done. I loved the first men on the moon "kangas". I was in outback Australia in 1969 when moon walking happened. With a group of miners in a picture theater we witnessed the astronauts hoping across the moon. Out of the dark came the comment which bought the house down, "They are like a coupla bloody kangas" (outback for kangaroo)

This is a great book because I think it can encourage kids by thinking bigger than the ordinary.

Buy it for an education, love it for the illustrations!
What a wonderful book! The brillant illustrations fill the pages with humor! And color! And action! The poetry fills a child's mind with thoughtful imagery. But the illustrations and poetry put together are enough to spark a child's creative side into full throttle!

A Burst of Firsts brings to life in child-size quantities the feats of "the biggest", "the best", "the first". The children I have read it to wanted to know what feats they could preform to be "the first" as soon as I had put the book down. We giggled together thinking of all the possibilities! They laughed at the pictures of the fat cow blowing a bubble and of the Dino breaking the sound barrier!

All the way down to the silo on the front cover, the illustrations are big and beautiful. The poems are thoughtful and playful!

A marvelous book that children will pick up over and over again!

C S Lewis Images of His World

A journey into the shadowlands
If you love C.S. Lewis as much as I do, then you will find this book captivating, transporting you into the world of Jack as a boy and as a man, as a pagan and as a Christian. Hopefully it will be back in print soon. Every page is lavishly illustrated with photos and artwork of people and places that were dear to Lewis. What makes it even more special are the descriptions of each place or person by lewis himself, taken from his letters and books. IT is the best gift a Lewis fan could receive, too, so look for a friend!

A wonderfully descriptive book
It is most unfortunate that this superb book has gone out of print. It is a pictorial tour of the places and people familiar to C.S. Lewis. Next to each picture or illustration is a caption explaining the relation to Lewis, with most of the country scenes having vivid, picturesque quotes from Lewis himself. This book can be read in one sitting or slowly digested over several days. If you ever find a copy, hang on to it. It's a lovely book.

C.S.Lewis-Creator of Narnia
I have loved the narnia books all my life and found this new book very interesting because it told me about the authors childhood which made me feel that I knew him. The book is also a great romantic story about his friendship and then marriage to the author Joy Gresham.

Great Book
As an avid reader since childhood of the Chronicles of Narnia, I was thrilled to read this wonderful biography of C. S. Lewis. The author paints a detailed picture of his privileged childhood in Belfast, Ireland, followed by unhappy years at English boarding schools.
I enjoyed reading about his many years at Oxford Univeristy, first as a brilliant student and later as a professor. His touching romance with American author Joy Gresham and her tragic death touched my heart.
This is a wonderful book and I recommend it to adults and young people. Cathy Gustavson, retired professor

As the wife of a diabetic with a sweet tooth, this book was a wonderful find and is a treasure! The recipes are easy, ingedients are usually ones you have on hand and the results are wonderful. Ball Co. makes a no sugar pectin which is a low methoxy pectin this book refers to quite a bit. It is easy to use in these recipes. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is diabetic or just likes the natural flavor of fruits and vegetables rather than the sugary recipes in regular cookbooks.

Change Your Smile
Published in Hardcover by Quintessence Pub Co (August, 1984)
Authors: Ronald E. Goldstein, John R. Lewis, and Louis Belinfante
Average review score:

most comprehensive selfassessment book in cosmetic dentisty
This book is an excellent description of the extensive renge of issues dealing with changing the appearance of a patient's smile. The book is clear about its objectives and is very easy for anyone to read and follow. After reading this book, patients can easily decide whether they are candidates for cosmetic dentistry and get a reasonably good idea of the procedures involved. The author has discussed several treatment options for every situation, and he has included self-evaluations for patients to use in making informed decisions. An introductory chapter of relating the smile to the entire face presents a unique perspective. Dr. Goldstein discusses contemporary interdisciplinary approaches in creating different aesthetic effects. The explanations are accompanied by excellent illustrations that demonstrate the changes possible by procedures in modern dentistry and medicine. Often the patient and the doctors are not on the same page as far as the patient's chief complaint is concerned. This may lead to a situation in which the treatment provided may be superior; however, the treatment did not address the patient's chief complaint, leading to the patient's being dissatisfied. This book may provide the critical link to complete the communication circuit between the doctor and the patient. After reading it, patients can have a better understanding of their problems, the steps required to address these problems, and the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure.Further, details of expenses provide the consumer with an idea of the financial commitment involved. In summary, this 324-page hardcover book with 575 high quality illustrations is the most comprehensive and clear presentation of an important self-assessment tool used in cosmetic dentistry. A must-read for patients, students, and clinicians involved with cosmetic dentistry.......reviewed for the Journal of the American Dental Association by Dr. Pramod K. Sinha, Assistant Professor, Univ. of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, April l99

This is the ultimate consumer guide to cosmetic dentistry
This book lets you analyze your smile and come up with the most practical solutions for whatever smile problem you have. There doesn't seem to be anything left out of the cosmetic problems and solutions to a better smile.....and a more attractive face as well. This is because there are chapters that involve the role of facial plastic surgery, orthognathic(done by the oral surgeon) surgery, and cosmetology. It contains a simple smile analysis in the first chapter and logically helps you understand what your problem or problems are. It is easy to comprehend what your choices are because both the patient photographs and illustrations are so easy to understand. In each treatment summary the author describes not only what the result can look like but more importantly, the maintenance required with each restoration as well as a realistic range of fees and life expectancy. Too often people fail to get what they want mostly because they really don't know what they want, and they don't know how to get it. The best way is to take this book with you to your dentist!!!

The Character of Meriwether Lewis : Completely Metamorphosed in the American West
Published in Paperback by Marmarth Press (01 December, 2000)
Author: Clay S. Jenkinson
Average review score:

When you've been to the Missouri, what's left?
If all history books were like this, we would all be avid students of history. I found myself wishing that this book was 500 pages long, because it was so interesting and enjoyable to read. If you have any interest in American history I would highly recommend this book. If you have no interest in American history, I would still recommend it!

The suicide of Meriwether Lewis has always been one of the more tragic and interesting mysteries of American history. Clay Jenkinson, in this book on the character of Lewis, is witty, profound, insightful, and highly readable. We learn about Lewis' interest in food, his views on Indians and women, his longing for an important place in history, his drinking and most importantly, his view of himself. We see the Expedition through the unedited writings of Lewis himself and through Clay Jenkinson's perspective on what those writings reveal.

In the end, we must still speculate about what was in Lewis' heart and head on the night he took his life, but we are left with a much better understanding of the workings of that mind.

"The dark despair that round him blew"
This excellent and wonderfully written book celebrates and critically examines the sensitive, lyric, and noble soul of Meriwether Lewis. Clay Jenkinson explores Lewis' psyche from a unique perspective - literally - as a first-person historical interpreter. Profound, humorous, and soulful reflection make this a great read. Jenkinson's knowledge as a Jefferson scholar also enriches the text. Valuable to anyone curious about America's epic. There is also a wealth of information on the author's website.

Charbonneau, Man of Two Dreams: A Novel
Published in Hardcover by Nash Pub Co (April, 1975)
Author: Winfred Blevins
Average review score:

Engaging Fur Trade Novel
Blevins brings to light the somewhat obscure life of Sacajawea's son, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, and weaves it into an enjoyable and meaningful novel. Charbonneau was half Indian and half white, which explains his dilemma of being torn between two worlds. Taken into custody by William Clark, Charbonneau begins his early education in both Protestant and Catholic schools in St. Louis, goes to Europe with Prince Paul of Wurttemberg for six years to continue his education and culture, comes back to St. Louis and then enters the fur trade. As the years go by, we see how he attempts to balance himself between the Indian and white man's world. Blevins' writing is very descriptive in detail, particulars and trivia of the present moment. It is as though he himself was there and lived it. I do not normally read fiction based on fact, but this is an exception to the rule.

Excellent Fur Trade Era Novel
This book is a fictional biography of Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, the son of Sacagawea and Toussaint Charbonneau. Very little is known of Jean Baptiste but Blevins imaginatively builds his novel around the small historical record. His characterization is plausible and enjoyable to read. It contains many vignettes that relate to events in the Fur Trade Era so interest is maintained. It is remarkable that Blevins was able to capture many insights into what it is like to be a half-breed. My Mother was Pawnee and my Dad was of Scottish extraction. I can vouch for some of the more contemplative passages in the novel that express Jean Baptiste's feelings regarding his special social status. For buckskinners, this is an important piece of literature that helps to fully express the society of the fur trade. For everyone else, it is just a good read.
